Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne became the 10th Sri Lankan cricketer batsman to score 5,000 runs in Test cricket on Thursday. Karunaratne achieved this spectacular feat during the ongoing second Test match against Bangladesh. Apart from this, he is also the fourth fastest Sri Lankan batsman to reach 5,000 Test runs in terms of matches played. Karunaratne scored 5,000 runs in the 138th innings of his 72nd Test.

Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara is still the highest Test run-scorer in the country in Test cricket. He has 12,400 Test runs to his name. At the same time, Mahela Jayawardene is second on the list, having scored 11,814 runs in the longest format of the game. All-rounder Angelo Mathews is fifth with 6,219 runs.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka openers Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimane got the team off to a good start on the first day of the second Test match against Bangladesh. Both batsmen have brought the team’s score to 114 runs in 37 overs without any loss till the time of writing the news. Lahiru Thirimane is batting with 52 and Karunaratne scoring 60 runs.
